Town Or City? Fishers Residents To Decide

Vote Expected In 2011 Or 2012

After hours of deliberation Monday night, the Fishers Town Council voted in favor of putting a "plan for reorganization" before the voters that would determine if the town will become a city.

The vote would take place in either 2011 or 2012, and residents would have the final say.

Under the plan, Fishers would have a mayor to be appointed by the council and not by public vote.

Fishers, a northern suburb of Indianapolis, is one of Indiana's 10 largest communities.

The town's population boomed from about 39,000 people in 2000 to an estimated 77,000. About 6,000 people live in the surrounding unincorporated areas.

Township board member Mike Reuter said the combined government would be more cost-effective, because Fishers' growth left fewer unincorporated residents paying for services, such as fire protection.
