INDIANAPOLIS — Right now the Red Cross needs your help. The organization has a critical blood shortage and donors of all blood types are urged to give now to help restock blood supply.
The donor shortage is a problem the Red Cross often faces during the winter months.
With the flu preventing some of their regular donors from giving and the winter weather causing cancellations of blood drives, winter always comes with the challenge of keeping up the blood supply.
Currently, the most critical need is for type 'O' blood. The Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of this type for emergencies or medical treatments.
Type 'O' blood is the most transfused blood type and can be transfused to patients of any blood type. Type 'O' is what hospital staffs reach for during emergencies. In the Indiana/Ohio region alone, the Red Cross needs 350 donors every day, which only supports patients being treated at area hospitals.
Without a necessary blood supply, their can be a delay in life saving medical treatments.
