INDIANAPOLIS — Leaders of a local animal shelter are working to help pets and let their owners know help is available.

Some say Romeo, a 15-year-old dog, is a hero because he rescued his family from a house fire in 2016.

After the fire, his family wasn't able to properly care for him and his health started to decline. They gave Romeo to someone else who eventually wasn't able to care for him and gave him to Leann's Animal Rescue.

Leaders at the animal rescue say he was malnourished, dehydrated and had severe infections.

"I've been doing this for a while and he brought me to tears, he licked me and I just started tearing up because I could just feel his pain," Leann Lawson said. "It was unbelievable he was just so sick, just so sick."

Lawson says he's doing much better since she started caring for him about three weeks ago, but she doesn't want to see other dogs go through what Romeo went through.

"I will do anything in my power to get them sprayed, microchipped," Lawson said.

Romeo is expected to make a full recovery and will hopefully find his forever home.
