FISHERS — Construction continues at the future homes of Sun King Brewery and the Fishers Test Kitchen at the Fishers District.

They are two of 17 locations set to open in the spring at the place where developers hope people who live and work in Fishers will want to visit and spend both their time and money.

"Right now, we are in The Signature Table. This is our culinary performance space that is part of the Fishers Test Kitchen," Fishers Test Kitchen co-founder Jolene Ketzenberger said. "We will be doing classes, private dinners, demonstrations, hands-on classes."

In the same building as Sun King Brewery, the Fishers Test Kitchen will consist of three small restaurant spaces where chefs will serve food to guests at the brewery.

"We are giving the chefs the entrepreneurial experience in launching a restaurant and at the same time, we are helping them prepare for launching out into our community where they can open their own restaurant," Fishers Test Kitchen co-founder and managing partner John Wechsler said.

This new idea comes as the demand for fresh local food in Fishers continues to grow.

"The types of companies we are creating and attracting here in our innovation economy, the tech companies, the people that work with those companies demand more than the traditional franchise experience," Wechsler said.

Six businesses have already opened at the Fishers District. Sixteen more and a hotel will open by spring 2020.

"People are typically driving to other places in Central Indiana to have those unique experiences," Fishers economic development director Megan Baumgartner said. "Now we have the opportunity to do that here in Fishers."

The original plans by the developer Thompson Thrift changed slightly from the start. They added 260 luxury apartments, increasing the total cost of the project by $38 million and making the grand total around $115 million.
