INDIANAPOLIS — School Choice Week in Indiana is helping parents to find the right academic option for their children.
When Janelle Obannon says she was in school, you either went to a public, private, or home school if you had enough money to go to a private school.
Now parents have to choose between public, private, charter, online, and magnet schools.
"The arts are real big in our house," Obannon said. "Sports is real big in our house. We look for schools that have the opportunity for them to advance in sports and arts."
Her 11-year-old daughter attends IPS Butler Lab School 60. The school mimics public magnet schools and offers an emphasis on a certain area of interest. It is a free option and helps students to hone in on their passions and aspirations.
Even though her daughter is happy at her current school, she says she is open to learning more about charter schools, which became an option in Indiana in 2002.
There are now more than 100 charter schools in the state and is a tuition-free option.
"If I could, I would love to home school her because kids are ridiculously mean," Obannon said.
Because of work, it's not the right fit for her family, but school choice week wants to make sure all parents can explore all of their options.
