INDIANAPOLIS — A businessman heard neighbors asking for more community spaces on the east side of Indianapolis and decided to do something about it.

Phil Coleman opened OfficePlex, 2131 East 10th Street, a business development center open to the community and entrepreneurs looking for a place to launch their future.

"I'm trying to do what my father said, if you're blessed with a few talents, take those talents and give it back," Coleman said.

Coleman is turning his passions into platforms for others, solely funded by Coleman, the radio station, computer lab, office space, and jazz club are all open to the community. Those who use it say it's a rare find.

"I'm so happy that this is in our community because unless you're a teenage and have access to the legacy facilities at Tech High School, there's no where for an adult to come and rent a recording studio," Sue Spicer said. "And to have the computers and the office space in an affordable way really is community building for us."

Coleman says he is ready to teach and his first lesson is showing people his building is for them.

"What I really want them to know in this community is we're here, we have the resources, we have the technical expertise to get your career started, and not only started but we can take you some places that you never even thought that you could go. I'm a living witness to that," Coleman said.

While Coleman has fully funded the Plex himself, he does welcome contributions.
