INDIANAPOLIS — Garfield Park is part of Citizens Energy Group's "Dig-Indy" project, aimed at making the city's water cleaner. However, people living near the park are accusing the utility company of downplaying the impacts of construction.
Tom Ferry walks his dogs past the construction site that's cropped up across from his home on Southern Avenue. "They pretty much been out there every day before 7 a.m.," Ferry said.
Cranes, cones and other equipment going in and century-old oak trees coming down.
"The noise is deafening, as is the diesel fumes and that come off that crane," Ferry said.
Next door neighbor, Ken Gigrich, says the working is jarring the very foundation of his house. "I mean it was really shaking the stuff on the shelves and that!" He said.
The neighbors received a flier about the work in February, but say that it downplayed the impacts of the project.
In a statement to RTV6, Citizens Energy says disruptions are part of any project this size, thanking the community for its cooperation and support.
The utility goes on to say the work at the site will wrap in the next few days, with the gravel coming out and grass going in. As for the trees, Citizens says that could not be avoided. They're planning to re-plant, but it's a sad thought for some.
"Originally, they said a week from this past Friday, so, in theory, Friday but it seems like they got a lot of work to do to clear out between now and Friday," Ferry said.
Citizens Energy said they plan to communicate with residents in the area as the project moves forward.
