INDIANAPOLIS — A veteran is taking matters into his own hands to get his belongings back after someone stole them.
Dan Cahill had thousands of dollars worth of tools stolen from his garage. He describes himself as a light sleeper and he was at home at the time.
"Saws, sanders, nail guns, lasers," he said. "To be awake, probably, when they did it just drives me nuts."
More than 50 cases of theft or breaking and entering have been reported in the community near Kentucky Avenue and I-465 in the past month.
The criminals got more than tools. They took two of his motorcycles: a 2008 Yamaha XR 250 Enduro and a 1989 Yamaha YZ125. And then he saw something he couldn't believe.
"The next day, the guy put the Enduro bike up for sale," Cahill said.
A friend told Cahill the bike was for sale on social media. Cahill made contact saying he was interested in buying.
He showed the guys the title and called police, and got the bike back. Unfortunately, the bike is damaged.
"They tore all the stickers and decals off of it," he said. "They cut a bunch of wires off of it."
The bike will need costly repairs, but Cahill is happy to have it back. Now he's hoping someone will shot his other motocross bike.
"Hopefully, we can get some stuff back and just put it out," he said. "People should be aware it could happen to anybody."
For now, Cahill his making sure the rest of his stuff is protected.
"All the doors are padlocked now. We got two new security cameras," he said. "I'm a firm believer in the Second Amendment. There's usually a firearm close at hand."
