INDIANAPOLIS — Two men are recovering after shooting at each other in a road rage situation Tuesday afternoon near Lafayette Road.

One man is lucky to be alive after getting caught in the crossfire.

"I'm still shaking in the inside a little bit because you've been in the middle of a crossfire," Dell Howard, who was shot at during the shooting, said.

Howard said a man cut in front of him in the road rage incident and exited his car in the AutoZone parking lot. Moments later, guns were fired from the driver, and Howard's windshield was hit.

"When I seen that bullet and all that glass hit me in the face, and that bullet hit and went through the back seat, that's when I hit the gas," Howard said.

Multiple insurance companies say that with road rage situations, these safety measures should be followed:

  • Keep your doors locked.
  • Keep a safe distance from the other driver.
  • If you're at a light, give enough space to move away from them if they're in front of you.
  • Avoid eye contact with the aggressive driver.
  • If the driver tries to confront you, call 911 or get to the closest police station.

Police also gave RTV6 ways drivers can protect themselves from road rage violence, here.

The situation at AutoZone could have been much worse. Howard is thankful not to be yet another victim of gun violence.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the situation is still under investigation.
