CARMEL — Much like many other eateries during the global coronavirus crisis, "Donatello's Italian Kitchen" has seen a significant decline in revenue since the coronavirus pandemic began.

But that hasn't stopped the Carmel business from helping its community, one program at a time.

"We're expanding our circle of help," Adam Aasen, co-owner of Donatello's Italian Kitchen, said.

Donatello's has provided hundreds of meals for hospital workers during the coronavirus pandemic through programs like "Feed the Frontline" and "Read to Feed." Some meals were made possible in part because of the help of customers; others came out of the business' pockets.

The Aasen's community assistance hasn't stopped there.

The family-owned business still wanted to do more for their local community, so they started "Carry-out for a Cause." A six-night event where 20% of all proceeds will go to support specific arts and social welfare organizations in Carmel.

"When I get frustrated at the things going on in the world, I ask myself, 'What's something positive I can do to help others?' I think a lot of us feel helpless during this crisis," Aasen said. "We can't fix everything, but we can do our small part to help those that are struggling."

Throughout the six-night event, each one of the groups will receive up to 20% of all sales during operating hours.

Some are art nonprofits, and others are organizations that help domestic violence survivors or youth development — and they've all notably been impacted by COVID-19.

Aasen says that regardless, many are struggling financially and need to feed their children.

"The arts are struggling too, without any income. We decided to help them. We are also raising money for organizations that prevent domestic violence and feed the hungry," Aasen said.

The six dates will be May 4, Actors Theatre of Indiana; May 5, Prevail, Inc.; May 11, Carmel Symphony Orchestra; May 12, Carmel United Methodist Church Food Pantry; May 18, Indiana Wind Symphony; May 19, Carmel Youth Assistance Program Summer Lunches.

Patrons may choose to support one, or all, of the organizations listed.

Donatello's is still offering curbside pickup for all meals.

And Aasen is proud to say that he has also been able to keep his entire staff employed. Still, he anticipates a tough year ahead.

"We are working twice as hard, and as a result, we are surviving," Aasen started. "Even when things reopen, I anticipate that we could see a tough year financially since some many people lost income this year. When people have less money, they go out to eat less."
