INDIANAPOLIS — As stay-at-home orders continue in Marion County and people are dealing with job loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a local organization is need of the community's help.
Coburn Place Safe Haven, in Indianapolis, provides housing to survivors of interpersonal abuse, including domestic violence survivors.
It's seeing an increase in crisis calls as emergency shelters are putting restrictions in place.
Coburn Place has started temporarily putting people in hotels until they can find permanent housing. Getting furniture to furnish houses for survivors as been a challenge due to the restrictions.
This means Coburn Place is spending more money it usually wouldn't.
"It's an unthinkable decision to make during this time," said Lauren Laski, vice president of development and mission advancement for Coburn Place. "'Do I stay in a household that is dangerous or do I flee my household knowing me and my family members might get a deathly illness?' It's a really difficult choice to make and people are unfortunately having to make it right now."
Survivors who have lost their jobs are also getting help from Coburn Place to pay for things like rent and utilities.
They are asking the community to consider donating to help them during the pandemic.
