CRAWFORDSVILLE — Louis "Sonny" Meyer Jr., an engine builder for the Indianapolis 500, died Saturday at 89.
Meyer Jr., the son of Louis Meyer, the first three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, bought the Offenhauser engine business in 1946 and was the chief mechanic or an engine builder for at least 15 Indianapolis 500 victories, according to a press release from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In 2013, Meyer Jr. was inducted to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.
