SOUTH BEND — Students at the University of Notre Dame will be back on campus this fall, with new coronavirus precautions in place. But the school's president says he doesn't know whether Notre Dame Stadium will be full of fans when the Irish take the field for the first time.
Father John Jenkins wrote an op-ed in Tuesday's New York Times addressing the question of sports for the first time.
Jenkins says he believes the school can keep student-athletes, coaches and support staff healthy, but that a football crowd of 80,000 people would be a different matter.
Jenkins wrote, in part, the following:
"I see no way currently to allow spectators unless we restrict admissions so that physical distancing is possible ... we will soon turn to answer the question of how many games we will play when we will play them and how many fans will be in the stadium."
As of now, Notre Dame is scheduled to open its season at home against Navy on Saturday, August 29.
