INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers broke ground Monday on a new, $50 million practice facility.
The facility was approved in November by the Capital Improvement Board. It will replace an employee parking lot on Delaware Street across from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The new building will feature a practice court, medical and training rooms, offices and a St. Vincent's Sports Performance medical clinic.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was on hand Monday for the groundbreaking.
The Pacers says 20 other NBA teams have built or are building similar facilities.
"We need this facility to compete in the NBA," said team spokesman Bill Benner. "We're a small market and we have to do everything we can to rise to the level of the larger markets that have more resources. We've see college players coming out of elite programs that have better facilities than we do."
The team hopes to have the building finished by March 2017.
