Despite downpours, much of Indiana still needs rain

When it's rained, it's poured over the last week. As the map below shows, the problem is the coverage hasn’t been very widespread. That’s why just about all of Central Indiana remains in the “abnormally dry” category of the US drought monitor released Thursday.

Our recent hot stretch isn’t helping either. Limited rainfall doesn’t go very far when we’re dealing with temperatures in the 90s each afternoon. That said, the USDA still reports the majority of Indiana corn and soybean crops to be mostly fair to good.

While rain chances do go up the next few days, still not everyone will see the wet weather. It looks like next week is mainly dry and hot once again. This will likely hold our dry conditions. Some areas may even go into moderate drought. The US drought monitor is updated each Thursday.
