INDIANAPOLIS -- December is here! It's the time of year snow and cold weather fans really start to get anxious.
After all, winter gets going later this month. Plus, there's the anticipation of whether or not our dreams of a white Christmas will come true.
You may want to put any hopes of snow on hold -- at least for the first few days of the month. While we do anticipate some chilly mornings, afternoon highs are expected to warm into the 40s and 50s for the first several days of December.
Look for a big temperature change to come our way on Dec. 6. A blast of polar air brings a true winter feel, with highs in the 30s. The cold stretch may stick around for a while. That's exactly what our official outlook from the Climate Prediction Center calls for. Below average temperatures are expected to win over most of the month.
Our average high falls from 44 on Dec. 1st to 36 as we get ready to bring in 2018.
Does a cold outlook mean snow? Not necessarily.
Our average snowfall certainly begins to ramp up this month. Indy typically gets 6.9" of snow in December. Last year, we closed out the month with 4.9" of snow.
The outlook for December 2017 actually has no clear signal for above or below average precipitation. That means we'll have to take things week by week. Snow lovers may not have to wait too long for a preview though. Snow showers are possible with the cold blast of air coming our way Wednesday.
