INDIANAPOLIS -- A suspect in two sexual assaults in downtown Indianapolis was charged Monday with a third attack that allegedly happened on the near-north side late last month.

Anthony Dwayne Jones, 25, faces nine felony counts of rape, sexual battery, criminal confinement and robbery in connection with the alleged attack, which police say happened on May 27 in the 1200 block of Central Avenue – just north of where I-65 crosses over.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim told police she was walking to work around 9 a.m. when a man came up from behind her and wrapped his arms around her neck, covering her mouth with the other hand.

“If you scream, I’ll shoot you. If you try to run, I’ll shoot you,” he allegedly said.

The man then told the victim to give him her money before beginning to move her toward a nearby alley.

At the same time, a jogger ran past. The victim told police her assailant loosened his grip and acted as though they were just talking. She said he told her if she tried talking to the jogger, he would shoot both of them.

The man then forced her into a spot between two pine trees before forcing her to perform a sex act on him.

After that, she said he just walked away “like he’s been out for a stroll. He didn’t look around or anything. He was just out for a walk.”

The victim ran back to her apartment and called police, who were able to secure the crime scene. Based on the similarity of the assault to other attacks downtown, police suspected Jones might be the culprit.

They assembled a photo array and the victim picked Jones out as her attacker.

Jones already had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with two other alleged assaults in May near a city-owned garage at the intersection of Market and New Jersey streets downtown.

The first victim told police a man followed her from the garage around 9 a.m. on May 22 and touched her inappropriately while she was going home. The suspect, later identified as Jones, ran from the scene before police were called.

The second victim told police Jones sexually assaulted her around 11 a.m. She was taken to Eskenazi Hospital to be treated.

Jones is currently being held without bond at the Marion County Jail. He faces 12 counts – including rape, robbery, criminal confinement and kidnapping – in connection with the May 22 assaults, and nine felony counts in connection with the May 27 assault.
