CARMEL, Ind. – Raising money for a cause can be tough, but one Carmel High School student’s fundraising efforts made it look easy after he raised more than $100,000 for cancer research.

Mason Klain, 16, spent seven weeks raising money to fund blood cancer research as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s inaugural Student of the Year competition.

In less than two months, Klain raised $100,867.

“Yea. It's a lot of money,” said Klain. “My dad, at first I wanted my goal to be $50,000, and I thought that was a big number.”

The sophomore said some of his motivation for raising the money was the connection he shared with his grandmother, who died from lymphoma about three years ago. He knew her as “Mema.”

Due to his large fundraising efforts, Klain was able to name two research portfolios. He named them both after his grandmother.

In total, the five students participating in the competition raised $240,000.
