Race fan gives Army vet free ticket to Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS -- When you think of Memorial Day weekend in Indianapolis, the first thing that may come to mind is the Indy 500.

Of course, the weekend about so much more. It's about honoring the men and women of the U.S. military who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

This story is about a little of both.

RTV6's Kevin Gregory says he could hardly believe it when a man walked up to him at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday and offered to give a free Indy 500 ticket  to a veteran or military member on active duty. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE

About an hour-and-a-half later, Army veteran Ricky Wilkinson came up to Kevin and Todd Klaassen on his bike.

Ricky said he was watching RTV6 and wondered if the free ticket was available.

He even brought papers (even though he didn't need to) to prove he was retired Army.
