INDIANAPOLIS -- Neighbors living in an Indianapolis north side community expressed concern Thursday about plans to build a possible 186-unit apartment complex near the Monon Trail in Nora.

Monon Development Partners filed to rezone the property of the former Ace Hardware store, located at 8502 Westfield Blvd, to proceed with plans to construct Nora Apartmentsalong with a coffee and ice cream shop.

Ruth Hayes, president of the Nora-Northside Community Council said there was a “packed house” of people who attended the council’s public meeting on the issue, and all attendees opposed to the development.

Several neighbors said the three, 4-story proposed buildings would cause more traffic as a YMCA and several schools are in the area including North Central High School and Northview Middle School.

"The biggest problem truly is the density. Where are all these extra people going to park?" said Chris Welsh of the Nora-Northside Community Council.

He is concerned tenants will park in the lots of businesses and on neighboring streets.

The board voted to opposed the development.

"I'm nervous about just that many more people with access to the roads and the Monon and schools and so forth that cause traffic issues," said neighbor Terry Feezle. "I just think it's getting to be almost too busy."

Monon Development Partners, who also said their will be 24/7 video monitoring, released a statement. In part it reads:

"The project's parking exceeds City of Indianapolis requirements by almost 50 percent, and a traffic study has been completed, which supports the proposed redevelopment."

The case is set to be heard by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission September 20 at 1 p.m. on the second floor of the City County Building in downtown Indy.
