MUNCIE, Ind. – A new Fresh Thyme store is set to break ground in Muncie over the next few weeks, but some people aren’t thrilled about the idea of a new grocer – especially those who own and operate a fresh, local market.
The owners of Downtown Farm Stand said their store will be at a disadvantage once Fresh Thyme comes to town, as the grocer has received special financial incentives to build in the area.
The Muncie Redevelopment Commission is providing $200,000 in infrastructure improvements, and Dave Ring of Downtown Farm Stand said he just wants a fair share.
"It should be a level playing field,” said Ring. “We're just asking for a fair shake. We think the city should drop the funding package for Fresh Thyme and let them come here on their own. We're not afraid of competition, but let them come here on their own terms."

Officials with the Muncie Redevelopment Commission don’t see any issue with the incentive offered.
“Why we do that? Because that's why we're here. That's what we do,” said Sam Beasley, president of the commission. “Improving our roads. Making our community safer. Working alongside private developments. That's our bread and butter. That is where we love to be operating. This is important to our community to invest in people who are willing to invest in us."
The Fresh Thyme location is expected to open in January 2018 in the 500 block of West McGalliard Road.
