INDIANAPOLIS -- Lawrence Township Schools have responded to a push to rename Amy Beverland Elementary School after Principal Susan Jordan.

Jordan led the Amy Beverland Stars for 22 years before her sudden death last week.

Now, there's a Facebook group called The Susan Jordan Memorial School Renaming Project.

On that page, a Minnesota woman named Julie Butcher posted a petition to get the school renamed after Jordan. She is the daughter of the principal who first hired Jordan at Amy Beverland.

"When we're going through something that's this tragic often people look for ways, tangible ways, to try to feel better and to try and help the community to heal, and I feel like this is a real tangible way to make that happen and meaningful for Susan's legacy to live on for generations," Butcher said.

Late Wednesday, the school district released a statement saying they are grateful for the outpouring of support for Susan Jordan and the Amy Beverland community. Regarding the petition to rename the school:

The MSD of Lawrence Township Superintendent, Dr. Shawn Smith, and the Board of Education will take action to honor the legacy of Mrs. Jordan at the appropriate time, while continuing to recognize the school's namesake, Amy Beverland, who was an honored and respected teacher. The school intends to work closely with the Jordan family to recognize Mrs. Jordan in the most fitting manner possible and to work with the community at large to honor the legacy of this great principal who served with distinction for more than 20 years.
