GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A controversial $20 million iceplex was officially introduced at Monday night's Greenwood City Council meeting, and both supporters and opponents packed city hall to fight for their side.

The 115,000-square-foot iceplex is planned for the Freedom Park off Stop 18 Road. Indy Fuel is hoping to build the iceplex, which would feature up to four ice rinks and retail space. The $20 million costwould be on the Fuel's tab.

"We've got somebody coming in that's willing to invest to their money into this iceplex to run it," Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said. "And they've got a proven track record."

It could bring a notable economic impact to the city. Hockey families say the rinks are desperately needed.

"We feel like we have a shortage of ice at the rink where we play right now," one parent said.

But some opponents say they can't get on board with the traffic that would come with the iceplex.

"I don't think they are going to be able to fix the roads quickly enough," Kathy Haab, an opponent of the iceplex, said. "I don't feel it is appropriate to have a commercial industry supported by a public park and our public tax dollars."

Monday's introduction was a bill to make the area an economic development area. There will be an initial vote in two weeks.
