Big-name company with a local foothold looks to hire more women

INDIANAPOLIS — Jessica Reidling is a woman who is not only holding her own in what is typically a male-dominated profession, but she's also excelling.

Reidling is now a technical operations supervisor for Comcast Xfinity, but she remembers her early days with the company five years ago.

"I was a tech. I went out into the field everyday," Reidling said. "I supported our customers whether I was installing them or fixing the issues I had inside their home."

Reidling was the only woman tech in her department when she started and points out there are not many women who work in the cable industry for any of the big companies.

"I think there is a stigma that it is more of a male job," she said.

Comcast is trying to change that. The company is launching an aggressive effort to hire more women as service technicians. Currently, there are only six on staff.

Comcast Indiana Public Relations Director, Mike Wilson, said the staff at his company needs to reflect the customer base.

"It's going to involve a lot of dealing with female customers, so having female techs is fantastic just to reflect the people who are out there who are subscribing to our services," Wilson said. "It just makes sense for a business to make that decision."

The company wants to hire roughly 60 new technicians this year. Prior experience is not needed, however, applicants should be able to climb ladders while lifting equipment and have a positive customer service demeanor.

Comcast provides training to install cable and internet systems and to troubleshoot problems.

The pay scale starts around $14/hour.

The company also provides health benefits, insurance, stock options and workforce development.
