MUNCIE, Ind. -- Leaders at Muncie Central High School are raising money to purchase an industrial washer and dryer to give underprivileged students a place they can come to wash their clothes.

The school has previously opened a pantry where students and parents can come and get between 20 and 40 pounds worth of food once a month. Just last week, the school says 114 families were served.

They also created a clothing bank, which is staffed by the school’s special needs students.

Now, leaders at Muncie Central High School want to buy an industrial washer and dryer so the students can have laundry service, but they need to raise $10,000 to purchase the machines.

“Some of our kids wear the same clothes every day,” Assistant Principal Justin Oliver said. “You can see them. They get dirtier and dirtier. They obviously would smell as well. What better way to clean them here for them?”

“We know they come here every single day. We will provide them with a mesh bag to bring their clothes back to school and be able to wash them at school while they are here,” Assistant Principal Kenna Jones said.

School leaders say they still need several thousand dollars to purchase the machines, but they hope to have the new school laundromat up and running by next spring or the beginning of next school year.

“Our students come with a lot of needs every single day. Food, clothing and a way to have clean clothes and take showers. We are trying to have our student’s necessities met. Once those are met, they can learn while they are here,” said Jones.

If you’re interested in donating to Muncie Central School’s washer and dryer fund you can make a check out to Muncie Central High School and send it to the attention of Assistant Principal Justin Oliver or Kenna Jones.
