Memorial sign unveiled for fallen Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz in Russiaville

RUSSIAVILLE, Ind. -- A memorial sign honoring fallen Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz was unveiled Sunday in Russiaville. 

Deputy Koontz's wife, Kassandra and their son, Noah, were both there for the ceremony at the intersection of Main Street and Union Street.

Deputy Koontz was fatally shot while serving a search warrant in Russiaville on March 20, 2016. During the incident, the suspect opened fire on Koontz and another officer as they approached the home. The suspect then turned the gun on himself. 

Both officers were struck by bullets, but Koontz died from his injuries.

The sign in Russiaville reads:

"On March 20, 2016, Howard County Sheriff Deputy Carl Koontz gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting our community. While serving an early morning search warrant in Russiaville, Indiana, the suspect opened fire on several officers. As a result, Deputy Koontz was shot and lost his life in the line of duty. The courage and selflessness in which he performed his job as a Sheriff's Deputy was an example for all. We will forever remember his dedication and commitment to his family, the Sheriff's Department and to Howard County."
