BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- People living in one Bloomington neighborhood are pushing the state to install a stop light at what they call a dangerous intersection near their homes before someone gets hurt.

"This is just the main road, all the people that work on the east side and live on the west side drive here and vice-versa," said Christine Koch.

Koch lives in a neighborhood near State Road 45/46 and Stone Lake Drive. Stone Lake Drive is the only way out to the state road and during busy times of the day, Koch says it gets backed up because drives cannot safely make a left turn to head east.

"It's a very dangerous intersection with schools, businesses, two motels and a condo complex," said Koch.

Drivers like Koch say they have contacted INDOT several times about the issue, and there was a traffic study done, but INDOT said that a traffic light would not work well at the intersection because it would impact Game Day traffic at Indiana University.

INDOT says adding a signal at the intersection would increase congestion and risk of accidents since there is a traffic light nearby at Kinser Pike. They are currently studying other options that would be safer for the area.

One suggestion is a median u-turn that would allow drivers to turn right onto State Road 46, then use the median to go back east.
