INDIANAPOLIS — At a recent Q-and-A, Ind. Gov. Eric Holcomb was asked about his priorities and the upcoming State of the State address.
“Be prepared to be wowed … by the simplicity of math,” Holcomb said with a smile.
Holcomb is expected to tout the state’s budget surplus of more than $1.5 billion, while also funding his Next-Level Agenda. Tuesday's State of the State address begins at 7 p.m.
Holcomb’s budget fully covered the requests from the Department of Child Services and Medicaid, but Democrats lamented the lack of large increase in teacher pay.
The budget plans released Thursday recommended a 2 percent increase for public schools each of the next two years, as well as a $20 million reallocation of a teacher grant. Holcomb could discuss his longer-term plan for getting teachers the raises that both sides of the aisle say they deserve.
Holcomb’s 2019 Next-Level Agenda focuses on the following pillars:
- Cultivate a strong and diverse economy
- Maintain and build the state’s infrastructure
- Develop a 21st Century skilled and ready workforce
- Public health and the drug epidemic
- Deliver great government service
A year ago, Holcomb discussed Indiana’s problems with DCS and the infant mortality rate at his State of the State address, saying, “There’s no one who cares more about Hoosier children than I do, and I’ll do whatever is necessary to ensure the success of our agency and its mission.”
