EDINBURGH — It's been quite a week for a Shelby County family who returned home from a camping trip Tuesday to find their shingles stripped from their home.

The priority was making sure the Giles family protected their home and knew their rights. However, on Thursday, the unexpected happened as they continued to wait for their insurance company.

"I want to be as good as these people are and return the favor in some way," Shellie Giles, whose home was missing a roof, said.

On Tuesday, Kevin and Shellie Giles returned from vacation to find their shingles stripped from their home in Edinburgh.

The family believes the unknown roofing company may have thought they were at the right house because Kevin was planning to replace the roof himself and had packages of new shingles laying outside the home.

The crew split the scene forcing the couple to call the police and file an insurance claim with a $2,000 deductible.

Their story caught the attention of Johnson County-based SPG Roofing and Restoration.

"It feels like a dream," Shellie said.

SPG reached out to RTV6 seeking to use their skills to bring peace of mind to this family.

"The owner of the company feels blessed in his business, and he wanted to do the right thing and help out the family — obviously they were done wrong," Dustin Rees, SPG Roofing and Restoration vice president, said.

"I'm amazed by it all. You see this on TV and now it's happening to you. I'm in disbelief," Shellie said. "It's opened my eye that there are good people out there."

The crew wrapped up work on Thursday afternoon.

SPG saved the family between $4,000 and $5,000.
