INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man now faces attempted murder charges for allegedly opening fire on two IMPD officers during a traffic stop.

Officers Monica Hodge and Caitlin Epley initiated a stop on a red 2009 Kia Spectra on Jan. 15 after noticing the license plate didn’t match the vehicle.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed Monday, when Hodge and Epley pulled the vehicle over, a male passenger in the vehicle jumped out of the car and began firing shots at them.

The officers ducked under the dash in order to avoid being struck. Neither was injured.

At least three bullets struck the vehicle’s front windshield – one of which lodged in the passenger headrest where Hodge had been sitting. Another bullet went into the hood of the vehicle. A bullet also struck and flattened the front driver’s side tire.

Once her passenger began shooting, the female driver of the stopped vehicle jumped out and raised her hands in the air. The male subject then got into the driver’s seat and drove off.

The man was identified as Ryan Michael McGill, 27. He was eventually located in an apartment in the 1300 block of South Belmont Street, where he had gained entry to a stranger’s residence by asking to use the phone.

When police arrived, McGill refused to leave the residence, prompting a SWAT standoff.

SWAT officers eventually made entry into the apartment, where they found McGill lying unconscious on the floor next to a bottle of pills. They also discovered McGill had opened up gas lines inside the residence.

On Monday, prosecutors charged McGill with two counts of attempted murder and one count of armed robbery. As of Monday afternoon McGill was being held at the Marion County Jail on a $100,000 surety bond.
