INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis police say they have taken a murder suspect back into custody after he failed to show for multiple court appearances.
Corey Spurlock, 23, was charged along with two other defendants – 28-year-old Kameron Martin and 27-year-old Anthony Breazil -- for the March 2016 robbery and murder of liquor store owner Joseph Klein.
Breazil agreed to plead guilty in November to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, a level 3 felony. Spurlock and Martin were also supposed to see trial in November, but it was delayed after technical issues in the courtroom led to a mistrial.
Following the mistrial, Spurlock requested and was granted a speedy trial – meaning he would need to face a jury within 70 days.

Before that could happen, though, Spurlock’s co-defendant, Martin, informed the court he wished to enter a new witness in the case. Judge Grant Hawkins agreed to allow the witness in both Martin’s and Spurlock’s cases.
Given the late entrance of a new witness, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office told RTV6 it no longer felt it could effectively bring Spurlock to trial within the 70-day period. Because of that, prosecutors were faced with the choice of either dismissing the charges against Spurlock, or agreeing to his release from pre-trial detention.
Prosecutors chose the latter, and Spurlock was ordered released from custody on Jan. 29. He was actually released from the Marion County Jail on Feb. 15 to home detention.
Court records show Spurlock then failed to appear for an appearance on March 12, at which point a warrant was issued for his arrest. He also failed to appear for the final pretrial conference in the case on April 25, and for an April 30 date that was supposed to be the beginning of the new trial.
On Thursday, Indianapolis police put out an alert asking for the community’s help in locating Spurlock. IMPD issued an update Friday afternoon saying he had been taken into custody,
Spurlock and Martin now face a June 25 trial date on charges of murder and robbery in Klein’s death. Spurlock also faces an additional charge of escape stemming from his failure to appear in court following his release from jail.
