INDIANAPOLIS -- Two Riley Children's Health surgeons were honored Wednesday with the state's highest civilian honor.

Dr. Mark Turrentine and Dr. John Brown were presented with the Sagamore of the Wabash award Wednesday.

Turrentine has served at Riley Children's Health for nearly 30 years. In addition to treating children in Indianapolis, he's led more than 20 mission trips around the world -- helping more than 400 kids get heart surgeries in other countries.

Brown has been with Riley Children's Health, IU Health and the IU School of Medicine for 40 years.

He's operated on more than 15,000 children.

The two men have worked together for decades.

"It was clear when Mark arrived on the scene some 30 years ago that he obviously had special dedication for the kind of work that we do," Turrentine said. "We've been partners for 30 years. It is a relationship I can't even begin to tell you. it was just a very good professional marriage"

The list of Sagamore of the Wabash recipients includes presidents, astronauts, artists and everyday citizens.
