INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis doctor who was shot and killed during a robbery at his home last November was honored by the University where his wife serves as a dean Tuesday evening.

Dr. Kevin Rodgers, a well-respected husband, father, coach and ER doctor, was inducted into the Marion University Clayton Family Circle of Honor.

His wife, Ruth, is Dean of Students at the university.

"He was a teacher and a giver," Ruth said of her husband. "He didn't sleep much because he was always out there doing something for somebody else and that's really who he was and what we'll remember."

Ruth accepted the honor for her husband on Tuesday and spoke for the first time about what type of man he was and what receiving the award in his honor means to her.

"This event is a wonderful opportunity that Marian University has given us to celebrate and recognize the passion and the lifelong work that my husband did in coaching and teaching," said Ruth.

Ruth said her husband helped run the IU School of Medicine and served as an assistant lacrosse coach and team physician at Cathedral High School - where his own son once played lacrosse and football.

"Kevin really committed his life to teaching. To teaching emergency medicine to residents and to teaching soldiers when he was in the army," said Ruth. "He loved Lacrosse and he loved Cathedral High School and he loved coaching those young men."
