TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The man accused of shooting and killing a Terre Haute, Indiana police officer has been identified.
Police say the suspect, 21-year-old Christopher Wolfe, was killed after an exchange of gunfire at the Garden Quarter Apartments on Friday.
Indiana State Police say the suspect started shooting at the officers from the second floor of an apartment building and the officers returned fire.
Officer Rob Pitts, a 16-year veteran of the force, was wounded and later died at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Terre Haute for a prayer vigil honoring Pitts.
The vigil Saturday evening outside the Vigo County Courthouse came hours after many people lined the city streets as a hearse took Pitts' body from a hospital to a funeral home.
Jeanie West says she's a former neighbor of Pitts and that he had a "heart of gold."
His services will begin with public calling hours 2-7 p.m. Tuesday at Indiana State University's Hulman Center. The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the arena.
