READ: Responses to Noblesville school shooting

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Responses to an active shooter situation at a Noblesville middle school were pouring in Friday morning from Indiana lawmakers, public safety officials and even Vice President Mike Pence.

Police said a teacher and student at Noblesville West Middle School were shot when another student opened fire around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The suspected shooter was quickly taken into custody, and the two victims were transported to Indianapolis hospitals.

Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear issued a statement Friday evening which read in part:

“Words are hard to express about the event that occurred this morning at Noblesville West Middle School. School shootings are a tragedy regardless of the location, but having one unfold in your community is heartbreaking and shocking.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the two victims – a middle school student and a male teacher. I know we all send them our love and well wishes. We also keep the countless others who have been forever changed by this senseless act of violence close in our hearts.

“Today an unfortunate shooting at a school has occurred in Indiana. State Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick is in contact with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and is actively monitoring the situation. We have confidence in Noblesville Schools Superintendent Dr. Beth Niedermeyer and her team, law enforcement, and first responders. "Our hearts go out to the students, educators, families and community members of Noblesville who this morning faced a senseless act of gun violence at Noblesville West Middle School. We understand at least one student and an adult may be injured, and we are praying for the best.

This national crisis has landed in our backyard. We all have a responsibility to keep our kids safe from violence, and it’s unconscionable that they live in fear that one day their school may be next. When is enough, enough?

Thoughts and prayers aren’t enough to keep our students and educators safe. We need to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people. We now know that it is up to communities, families, activists, educators and the students themselves to stand up and demand that those who are trusted with protecting them do their jobs." -- Indiana State Teachers Association President Teresa Meredith

"Our hearts are breaking for the students, teachers and families affected by the shooting at Noblesville West Middle School. Our immediate concern is for the victims injured in and affected by this tragic event. As a state we must find ways to ensure comprehensive safety and security of our schools. Legislators must admit and take seriously that we have to keep guns out of our schools, and restrict access to deadly weapons by dangerous individuals. No child should go through something this traumatizing and it’s our job to stop it." -- Indiana Senate Democrats

“The epidemic of violence sweeping across American schools has now come to Indiana. While we await additional information on the school incident in Noblesville this morning, we must brace ourselves for the reality that our schools and our children are under siege by an unspeakable wave of terror that is taking full advantage of our open and free society.

“School safety plans, resource officers, red flag laws and hardened targets are vital to the defense of our schools and our children. 

“While we all join in prayer for the victims and their families, we must continue on the path of identifying the best and most comprehensive ways to protect our schools and prevent these tragedies.” – Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill

“Hoosiers are standing strong with the Noblesville community. We continue to pray for and support Noblesville West Middle School and the student and teacher who are currently hospitalized,” said Congressman Todd Rokita. “I commend our first-responders who swiftly and diligently worked together to keep the students and faculty safe." – Rep.
