In 1970, the Pacers won their first ABA championship.

After getting past the Carolina Cougars and the Kentucky Colonels, the Pacers faced the Los Angeles Stars in the ABA finals.

In Game Six, Roger Brown scored 45 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, and fellow future Hall of Famer Mel Daniels added 18 points and 27 boards, as the Pacers clinched the title in Bobby "Slick" Leonard's first full season as head coach.

It was the first of multiple titles and a string of dominance for the Blue and Gold.

And race fans were witnessing the same thing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - with an upstart driver who would also begin a period of success at the hallowed ground in Indy.

For the first time ever, each of the 33 cars in the field for the 54th Indy 500 were turbo charged.

And the mechanical advancements caused problems for at least one driver as Jim Malloy suffered suspension failure on the final pace lap to start the race.

Once officially underway, the talented field was dominated by Al Unser.

Big Al started from the pole, led for 190 laps, and had lapped the entire field by lap 175.

With his victory he joined his brother Bobby as the first siblings to win the Indianapolis 500.

It was also a special day for 1963 champ Parnelli Jones, who recorded his first win ever as a car owner.
