FISHERS, Ind. -- The City of Fishers could be cracking down on vaping and chewing tobacco in its public parks.

The Fishers City Council will discuss a proposed ordinance Tuesday night that would ban e-cigarettes and vaping in public parks.

The changes to Fishers city codes would include e-cigarettes and vaping under the definition of smoking, meaning they would be banned where "No Smoking" signs can be found. The ordinance would also include chewing tobacco and snuff under the definition of tobacco, also banning them in parks.

The proposal received a 4-1 vote from the Parks Advisory Committee, and has the support of SPORTS, a Fishers youth-based athletics organization.

The executive director of SPORTS, Lynda Carlino, sent the following letter to the city.

Coaches and parents are role models for these children. We believe that during these activities that promote health and wellness, using tobacco, in any form, should be prohibited.
Currently the parks do not allow smoking. Unfortunately chewing tobacco has become another way in which tobacco can be used and has been proven to be a dangerous activity.
As such, we would ask that it be added to the current policy and be prohibited as well.
In addition to the health risk, an argument can be made that the new policy would aide safety and aesthetics in the parks.
Many individuals who chew tobacco spit it out indiscriminately.
As such, there is tobacco spit around the park. This can be stepped in, is extremely unpleasant looking and is difficult and costly to clean.

It is unknown if the city council will vote on the proposal Tuesday night.
