INDIANAPOLIS -- One of two men killed by a suspected drunk driver while standing outside their vehicle on the side of I-70 early Sunday morning is a Colts player.

Indiana State Police troopers believe Jeffrey Monroe was a rideshare operator who was transporting Edwin Jackson when Jackson became ill. Monroe had pulled the vehicle over to the emergency lane near the 76.4 mile marker and got out to assist him.

That's when a black Ford F-150 struck the car and both Jackson and Monroe, according to police.

A trooper coming up on the scene made an evasive maneuver to avoid the crash and struck a body that was lying in the center lane.  Police have not released which man the trooper hit or if the man was dead before being struck in the road.

State police say the driver of the truck, Alex Cabrera Gonsales, 37, ran from the scene but was arrested by police a short time later trying to run up an exit ramp.

Alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash. Gonsales was also driving without a license, according to police.

The trooper involved in responding to the crash will be investigated as well.

The crash and deaths remain under investigation by Indiana State Police.
