MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. -- An EMT died in a two-vehicle crash after an ambulance driver fell asleep Monday morning in Miami County, Indiana, police say.
The crash happened around 3:45 a.m., near the intersection of U.S. 31 and State Road 218.
A trooper with the Indiana State Police said an EMT was traveling southbound on U.S. 31 approaching a red light at State Road 218. A 2013 Dodge Dart was in the intersection with the right-of-way. The ambulance didn't stop for the red light, and crashed into the Dodge Dart.
A 5-month-old patient, the patient's mother, and an EMT, Mousa Chaban, 32, were in the back of the ambulance. Mousa was partially ejected from the ambulance. He died from his injuries. Neither the child nor the mother were injured.
The driver of the ambulance allegedly fell asleep before the crash, police say. They were not hurt.
The driver of the Dodge Dart was taken to a hospital with a broken collarbone. A passenger in the Dart suffered a non-life-threatening head injury and was hospitalized.
Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved.
This is the second fatal crash on U.S. 31 within two weeks. On Jan. 12, a person was killed near U.S. 31 and Business 31, north of the new crash location.
